Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems (MEMS) technology enables us to design and fabricate miniature sensors and actuators which can be used to directly manipulate microscale subjects such as cells in fluids. Moving, stopping, mixing and separation of fluids and particle are the basic microfluidic processes. For bio-medical applications, macro complex molecules commonly found in the bio-fluid flow present many challenges which do not exist in simple fluid flows. Furthermore, target collection, sample preparation and bio-marker detection involve flows from the macro to nano scales. Handling the multi-scale problem with different governing forces is not commonly encountered in traditional fluid dynamics. In addition, the interactions among macro fluid molecules and the surface play a major role in determining the efficiencies in medical diagnostic and drug screening devices. The performances of these diagnostic and therapeutic instruments depend on the integration from molecular to system level. In this presentation, we will discuss the challenges in the multi-scale integration processes.
